WHAT IS LIFESTYLE MEDICINE?
Lifestyle medicine is a branch of medicine focused on preventive care and self-care dealing with research, prevention, and treatment of disorders caused by lifestyle factors and preventable causes of death such as nutrition, physical inactivity, chronic stress, and self-destructive behaviors, including the consumption of tobacco products and drug or alcohol use. Lifestyle medicine focuses on educating and motivating patients to improve the quality of their lives by changing personal habits and behaviors around lifestyle.

THE UNIQUE ROLE OF LIFESTYLE MEDICINE
Lifestyle medicine is the strict focus on lifestyle behaviors. The success of this approach depends on patient motivation and to be effective there must be a coaching approach to the care given. Lifestyle medicine should apply to every practice and every patient making it possible to benefit all patients when positive lifestyle changes are applied. In addition, lifestyle medicine emphasizes the use of a collaborative care model because of the incorporation of allied health care professionals to provide much of the direct counseling. Finally, lifestyle medicine involves prescriptive lifestyle interventions for specific diseases or risk conditions, cognitive behavioral therapies in lifestyle change, motivational counseling, and coaching patients to become more involved and responsible for their own outcomes.
HOW DOES LIFESTYLE MEDICINE COMPARE TO OTHER TYPES OF MEDICINE?
Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) is a group of diverse medical and healthcare
systems, practices, and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional
medicine.
Complementary Medicine is used with conventional medicine.
Alternative Medicine is used in place of conventional medicine.
Mind Body Medicine focuses on the interactions among the brain, mind, body, and behavior, and
on the powerful ways in which emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and behavioral factors can directly affect health.
Integrative Medicine combines treatments from conventional medicine and CAM for which there is
some high-quality evidence of safety and effectiveness. It is also called integrated medicine.
Preventive Medicine includes all aspects of medical care aimed at preventing health problems.
Functional Medicine is a patient-centered approach that goes beyond a typical holistic model to balance core functional processes in the body such as cellular metabolism, digestive function,
